I Have Surrendered

This hymn is a setting of a poem of St. Teresa of Avila, in which her soul sings of the holy exchange between itself and God - He has given everything for her (in His Sacrifice) and to her (in giving the Holy Spirit) and now she surrenders and gives her all to Him, thus entering a spiritual marriage for ever. It is especially suited as a communion hymn or an offertory (gifts) hymn. The music is modal (phrygian mode III) and thus has feel suited to her epoch, as well as having a 'Spanish' feel with the semitone in the mode occurring as the second note of the scale, thus giving the more eastern exotic feel that often characterises medieval Spanish music due to the influence of northern Africa. The overall effect is a love ballade between the soul and Christ and a prayer of total commitment to Him, for the way He has pursued her and loved her.
