St Patrick's Magnificat

Words: Robert Loretz based on excerpts from St. Patrick's Confessions
Music: Robert Loretz
This ballad is inspired by St. Patrick's own words in his Confessions. The title comes from the fact that St. Patrick is so acutely aware that he has received untold graces despite his nothingness, and wants to forever sing of God's goodness in return, We are reminded of the core of the magnificat: "He looks on His servant in her nothingness. Henceforth all ages will call me blessed, the Almighty works marvels for me, holy HIs name, His mercy is from age to age on those who fear Him..." The music has the feel of an Irish Medieval ballad, following the story of St. Patrick, including his touching awareness that he has not had an education equal to the eloquence required of him as a bishop, due to his years of slavery. The song emphasises the faithfulness and mercy of God and the way that God is present to us well before we are aware of Him. This aspect evokes the confessions of St. Augustine: "You were deep within me all the while that I remained apart." (See for example: "O Beauty Ever Ancient" on this website.
