O Come Emmanuel, the 7 "O" Antiphons

Words: Liturgical Antiphons for the "O's" of Advent, adapted by Robert Loretz
Music: Traditional (O Come O Come Emmanuel)
I have adapted the words of the seven "O" antiphons for liturgical use as Alleluia acclamations or Magnificat Antiphons for Vespers from December 17th - 23rd. The hymn can be used throughout the whole of Advent. It is imbued with a spirit of longing for the Messiah under seven titles that particularly reference the Old Covenant and its anticipated fulfilment in the New.

O come Thou Wisdom, draw us nigh,
Come from the mouth of God most high.
In gentleness and strength sustain,
To us the path of Truth make plain.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
is born to save thee, Israel.

O Adonai, O Israel’s King,
As burning bush appearing,
On Sinai giving Moses Your law,
Come save us now in might and awe.
Gaude, Gaude, Emmanuel
nascetur pro te Israel.

O come, O Thou of Jesse’s stock,
Come herd all nations in one flock,
Let kings fall silent in Your way,
That we come to the light of day.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
is born to save thee, Israel.

O come unlock, O David’s key,
From sin’s dark prison set us free,
And from death’s shadows lead the way,
that we come to the light of day.
Gaude, Gaude, Emmanuel
nascetur pro te Israel.

O rising Sun, eternal ray,
Dispel injustice in our way,
Enlighten paths where death has hold,
Unite all peoples in one fold.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
is born to save thee, Israel.

O come, desire of nations, come,
As cornerstone draw all in one,
O come to save all men of clay,
And lead them to eternal day.
Gaude, Gaude, Emmanuel
nascetur pro te Israel.

O come, O come Emmanuel,
Awaited King of Israel,
Lord in Your mercy come to save,
And give us victory o’er the grave.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
is born to save thee, Israel.
