Ascent To Mt Carmel

Words: Adapted from St. John of the Cross by Robert Loretz
Music: Robert Loretz
This song is an English version of the canticle "Ascent to Mt. Carmel" by St. John of the Cross. I have attempted to capture the feel of his poem by keeping as best I could to his original rhyme scheme and meaning, so that English speakers can experience the canticle as a true poem. The piece is a love-song between the beloved soul and God the Lover, in the vein of the Song of songs. The soul is able to be led by God into the secret of divine - human intimacy, seeing her house (the senses) is still enough for her to slip away. The soul is then led, trusting in what she hears through faith but proceeding without sight, to the place of intimacy with God, where she is truly conquered and sustained by His love. The song makes a good complement to "For Love of You," which was inspired by St. John of the Cross' commentary on the first two stanzas of the same Canticle.
